Spirit Art Dolls & Sugar Skulls

July 16 - August 26
Griselda Tello

With this workshop I wish to share with my students the traditional celebration of life I learned while living in Mexico, by demonstrating several techniques to make Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Spirit Dolls as well as painted Sugar Skulls designs over polymer clay cabs.

Come to play and be inspired to create Spirit Art Dolls as a means of relaxation, I will show you how to create your own by working with textiles and repurpused materials available to you from your own closet or kitchen (like we will do on this class with a whisk) just by adding a few embellishments and a bit of magic.

If you wish to join our class you don't need to know how to make polymer clay faces because I am offering a kit for sale while supplies last.

The Bone Keeper

Out of my workshop of Blue Corn Maidens came this beauty by Roslind, dressed in dramatic garments showing her belly of red corn as well as a jar full of bones.  To me, she represents the core of what we are, a bundle of memories kept deep in our bones honoring traditions, healing and transformation.

The Blue Corn Maiden and her sisters.

When asking for feedback to my class, about this Summer Workshop, someone pointed out to me that I did not share the legend of the Blue Corn Maiden in my videos, she made a good observation because when I decided to teach this class I went looking for a simplified version of the legend and found so many that I did the next best thing, I created my own concept by naming her The symbol of abundance and prosperity.   As simple as that!

There are a couple of stories I liked, one of them involves many dancing sisters, a group of Corn Maidens!!  which in a way became true with those Spirit Dolls created by my class because people started making their dolls with their different colors, that was very moving to watch.
I believe we create our own myths and our own stories, and now more than ever we need to share them with the world.
May the Spirit of the Blue Corn Maiden and her sisters continue to bless your hands, home and days with beauty and creativity, singing a joyful song of Peace for our land and the whole world, because we are in here to plant seeds, to harvest and celebrate abundance and prosperity...  it does take a village to bring about serenity and peace for future generations.
Bright Blessings.
Griselda
PS These are the videos and written stories I liked the best.

Online Workshop Retreat

Desert Spirits with Griselda Tello

Classroom No. 106
Session One: June 6 - July 17

For this workshop I have create a sculpture designed with polymer clay and mixed media elements in this instance the themes I have chosen were inspired by my love for the desert and the first people of Arizona. I am teaching students how to create a variety of spirit dolls based on these themes.

The Blue Corn Maiden and Sedona Moon are, for me, core symbols of abundance, prosperity and serenity.  The rich colors of the land connected with the stories, lore and traditions of the Native American Hopi and Anasazi people inspired me to make these figures.

The first section of this workshop introduces students to The Blue Corn Maiden's Journey.  These lessons include how to create Kitchen Witches on a whisk attached to a glass jar.

Students will learn how to make an assemblage doll from a wire whisk and a household jar. I will teach several techniques including layering, basic wire and cloth sculpting, wrapping, painting, and the building of the dolls form around a clay face and clay breast shield. We will create two variations on the same theme.
In the second section of this workshop we move forward on our journey together where we will meet The Sedona Moon represented by two spirit dolls; The Squash Blossom Song and Shaman Moon supported by a painter's brush, honoring our inner artistic muse.
