Online Workshop Retreat

Desert Spirits with Griselda Tello

Classroom No. 106
Session One: June 6 - July 17

For this workshop I have create a sculpture designed with polymer clay and mixed media elements in this instance the themes I have chosen were inspired by my love for the desert and the first people of Arizona. I am teaching students how to create a variety of spirit dolls based on these themes.

The Blue Corn Maiden and Sedona Moon are, for me, core symbols of abundance, prosperity and serenity.  The rich colors of the land connected with the stories, lore and traditions of the Native American Hopi and Anasazi people inspired me to make these figures.

The first section of this workshop introduces students to The Blue Corn Maiden's Journey.  These lessons include how to create Kitchen Witches on a whisk attached to a glass jar.

Students will learn how to make an assemblage doll from a wire whisk and a household jar. I will teach several techniques including layering, basic wire and cloth sculpting, wrapping, painting, and the building of the dolls form around a clay face and clay breast shield. We will create two variations on the same theme.
In the second section of this workshop we move forward on our journey together where we will meet The Sedona Moon represented by two spirit dolls; The Squash Blossom Song and Shaman Moon supported by a painter's brush, honoring our inner artistic muse.

Serenity, Loss and Changes

This page has been reposted from an old block at the time when my trees were still alive, I miss them terribly.

Reflections in the pool
quietness
misty garden
a breath of serenity

“Of course my moods change, but the average is serenity. I have a firm faith in art, a firm confidence in its being a powerful stream which carries a man to a harbor, though he himself must do his bit too; at all events, I think it such a great blessing”
Vincent van Gogh
Tomorrow, they will come to cut down one of my birch trees which looks very sad, I hope we can save the main trunk, perhaps the smaller branches will stay alive.
It is hard to see my garden changing, the trees hanging over the pool look gorgeous, but make a huge mess, we did not plant them, but even tho we have to work hard to keep the pool clean, I appreciate the micro forest in the backyard.

These trees have provided me with many lovely branches for my Spirit Dolls, it is with a sad but thankful heart that I will see it go. At present date the pine trees have been removed as well.

Friday afternoon...this was painful to watch, but some of the branches were dead and they were right over the pool, I hope some of those new branches get stronger, otherwise, we will have to cut down the tree near the wall.

Vintage Painted Rocks

Each time I water my garden I see the cottages I painted on rocks 23 years ago which have sat outdoors all these years without much damage to the paint.  One of them is finally giving signs of deterioration, I guess I will be doing some restoration work soon.

I started by making some for myself and also for gifts, then the project evolved and I sold them to Disneyland (along with other rocks with painted landscapes) to decorate their shops in Adventure land.  It was not an easy task to deliver these rocks to the park because they were rather heavy.
I love my rocks because they remind me of those years when people used to teased me about "painting on anything that did not move" Looking a little tired now the textures under the paint still intact (my secret formula ...winks) but considering  they have been outdoors all these years the image survived rather well, a good testimony to DecoArt - Americana
